Why Using the Correct Electrodes with Your Elle TENS Machine Matters

When purchasing replacement electrode pads for your Elle TENS, Elle TENS2 or Elle TENS+, it can be tempting to choose any electrodes that fit the lead wires or carry regulatory approvals such as CE, UKCA, FDA or TGA. These approvals alone don't mean the electrodes are suitable for every TENS device, and especially not for the Elle TENS range.
Electrodes Are Part of the Elle TENS System
Electrodes aren't simply disposable accessories. They form part of the TENS machine's electrical circuit and directly affect the stimulation delivered to the user during labour. When we developed our Maternity Elle TENS devices, we had to verify and validate the safety, electrical performance and therapeutic performance of the complete system using specified electrodes.
For this reason, our official Elle TENS hypoallergenic self-adhesive electrode pads are regarded as an integral part of the device rather than as interchangeable consumables.
Not All Electrodes Perform the Same
Even electrodes of the same size (or similar to our Elle TENS 40x100mm self-adhesive electrodes) can differ in their:
- Conductive area
- Gel formulation
- Conductive materials
- Electrical impedance
- Adhesive properties
These differences can alter how the electrical pulses from the Elle TENS are delivered through the skin, potentially affecting both comfort and treatment performance.
Why Independent Certification Isn't Enough
Many replacement electrodes are independently certified or cleared under regulatory schemes such as CE, UKCA, FDA and TGA. These approvals show that the electrodes meet the applicable requirements for their own intended use, but they don't confirm compatibility with our Elle TENS, Elle TENS2 and Elle TENS Plus machines, since that compatibility hasn't been tested.
What Are the Risks?
Using electrodes that haven't been specified or validated by Elle TENS may:
- Alter the electrical performance of the device during labour.
- Reduce the effectiveness of treatment.
- Increase the likelihood of skin irritation.
- In rare cases, contribute to electrical burns due to changes in current distribution.
Although these problems are uncommon, as the manufacturer we cannot guarantee that the Elle TENS, Elle TENS2 or Elle TENS+ will perform as intended when used with unvalidated accessories, particularly during a moment as significant as giving birth.

Safety, Compliance and Manufacturer Responsibility
The Elle TENS range of machines are classified as medical devices that undergo extensive testing and risk assessment using specific accessories as part of the medical regulatory approval process. As the manufacturer, our safety, performance and regulatory compliance claims can only apply to tested self-adhesive electrode pads.
If alternative electrodes are used with our devices for labour, Elle TENS won't be able to accept responsibility for the safety or performance of the device. Any warranty or product liability coverage provided won't apply where an incident is attributable to the use of non-validated accessories.
Choosing the Right Electrodes for Your Elle TENS
Many alternative replacement electrode pads may appear identical, but they aren't necessarily electrically equivalent. Choosing our self-adhesive electrodes, manufactured specifically for the Elle TENS range, helps ensure your device performs during labour as designed, with safety and therapeutic performance that stay consistent.
Compatibility matters just as much as medical certification.
